Zhuo Yue (卓越), also known as Jerry Zhuo, is a composer, conductor, and researcher from Xiamen, China, currently based in the UK. He is Lecturer in Composition at Cardiff University School of Music and a composer published by Universal Edition. He completed his PhD in Music Composition at Cardiff University under the supervision of Prof Arlene Sierra, supported by a full studentship.

Zhuo’s work centres on questions of cultural identity, with a particular focus on Minnan (southern Fujian) traditions such as Nanyin, explored through experimental and postmodern compositional practices. His music engages critically with the construction and perception of “Chineseness” in a global context, often combining ethnographic research with compositional experimentation. A defining feature of his practice is the integration of theatricality, gesture, and interdisciplinary thinking, with frequent use of vocalisation, found objects, unconventional notation, and performative structures. His music has been performed and commissioned by leading ensembles and organisations including BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Riot Ensemble, Juice Vocal Ensemble, and Ty Cerdd. His recent work increasingly extends beyond the concert hall, encompassing sound installation, improvisation, and cross-disciplinary performance.

Alongside his compositional practice, Zhuo maintains an active and growing research profile at the intersection of ethnomusicology, composition, and cultural studies. His research focuses on contemporary transformations of Nanyin practice, exploring issues of pedagogy, vocal style, cultural sustainability, and relational aesthetics. Drawing on methodologies such as ethnographic observation, interview-based research, and practice-led enquiry, his work examines how traditional musical forms generate new meanings in modern contexts. He has presented his research at international conferences including CHIME and the Silpakorn University International Music Conference, and has undertaken research visits and collaborations with institutions in China, including Xiamen University. His ongoing engagement with the Nanyin Yayi Society forms a key component of his long-term fieldwork and artistic research.

Zhuo’s early musical development began in Xiamen, where he studied double bass and composition under conductor Wu Mingfang. His first orchestral work was premiered at the age of 15, followed by an award-winning music drama broadcast on local television. After initially pursuing degrees in Economics (University of Bath) and International Management (London School of Economics), he returned to music, completing an MA (Distinction) and PhD in composition at Cardiff University.

At Cardiff, Zhuo is actively engaged in teaching, research, and international collaboration. He serves as Co-Director of International Engagement at the School of Music, supporting global partnerships, student exchange, and cross-cultural initiatives. His work reflects a commitment to fostering dialogue between musical traditions, disciplines, and communities.
